Is it okay to gain weight after Bariatric Procedure?

In our earlier post we said that explained weight loss after a bariatric procedure, one might lose up to 70% of their excess weight. For some, it may be a little higher at 75%-80% or for some it may be a little lesser at 60%-65% depending on the measures they take like adhering to the nutritional plan handed by the nutritionist and also incorporating exercises in their lifestyle.

However, after hitting the peak weight loss, it is noticed that in many individuals, there might be a slight increase in weight. This slight increase is pretty normal for any person. A perfect workout regimen and becoming physically very active however addresses this problem completely to some extent.

It is estimated that the average weight gain is 8%-10% of the excess weight they once had. But this is not a worrisome situation. It has been found out that over 80% of morbidly obese persons who underwent a bariatric procedure never gained more than 50% of their excess weight even after 10 years. That effectively means the worst situation undergone by the obese individual before their surgery is over for good.

The following things should keep your weight gain under check.

  • Stick to your nutrition plan as handed by the nutritionist after your bariatric surgical procedure.
  • Avoid high-calorie food and always have food in smaller plates and portions.
  • Avoid alcohol as it may relax your stomach and make bigger room to take more food.
  • Incorporate a robust exercise program and hit the gym regularly. At least 4-5 days of work out in a week should be sufficient.
  • Prepare your body slowly for walking long distances and make it a lifelong habit.
  • Keep yourself happy and be in the company of people with a good physique to keep yourself motivated.
