Can home remedies or Yoga cure Hernia?

Can any home-based remedies or yoga cure hernia? There is clear evidence that there are no home remedies for hernia. There is also no proof that Yoga can cure hernia. But how come some people claim to have cured Hernia by Yoga or by certain home-based remedies? Let us find out. But first, let us see what all activities have to be avoided if you have a hernia.

What activities are to be avoided if you have Hernia?

  1. Lifting weights like a bucket of water, LPG cylinders, weights in the gym, lifting children, etc. This is because the abdomen pressure increases and it can have a negative effect on the hernia. Sometimes it can lead to complications too.
  2. Avoid constipation. This is because constipation induces you to strain while passing motion and hence your hernia can worsen.
  3. Cough, wheezing, asthma, straining to pass urine in case you have prostate problems, phimosis, smoking, etc, can put pressure on the abdomen and it can weaken the hernia.
  4. The next most important factor to consider is your weight. People with a hernia should watch their weight and control their obesity because the increased fat can not only aggravate the hernia but can also hinder the hernia repair surgery.

Some people claim Yoga can cure Hernia. Is it true?

There is a wrong notion that Yoga can cure hernia condition without surgery. There is no element of truth in this claim. A hernia is a defect and hence cannot be cured by any Yogasanas. As a matter of fact, one needs to be mindful of the fact that certain Yogasanas done by twisting and bending the body can at times lead to complications in the hernia.

Some people would tell us that their hernias disappeared after doing yoga or other forms of exercise. It may be recalled that Hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall wherein the intestine, fat or any other organ can come out. There are two probabilities of how some claim that their hernia has disappeared after doing Yoga.

The first probability is the condition itself would not have been hernia in the first place. There could have been swellings in the lymph nodes or lipoma (fat accumulation), nearer to the groin area and this could have been mistakenly been diagnosed as a hernia. When the infection subsides, the swelling could have resolved automatically. The nerve and blood supply to the testis can sometimes undergo fluid accumulation and can swell. This could be mistaken for a hernia.

The second probability is when the contents of the Hernia get reduced. Here the hernia clearly is still present and it can pose risk anytime in life. So hernia is clearly a defect, they cannot disappear by doing yoga or other exercises and they need surgical intervention for complete cure.

Are there home remedies for Hernia?

No, not at all, there are no known home remedies for hernia. As said earlier, a hernia is a defect, a tear in the abdominal wall. This tear cannot automatically heal or stitch itself by any home remedies. So a person with a hernia has to get the hernia surgically repaired or corrected for a hernia. Any dubious claim from any YouTube videos or quacks who have no medical knowledge or background should be ignored if you have a hernia. Get your hernia surgically repaired as soon as possible and resume your normal life, even doing Yoga, after your surgeon says you are fit.
